Oleńka
Aleksandra De Sas Kropiwnicka
Olenka in Africa' is a gripping autobiographical sequel to the book, 'Olenka'. After World War II, Olenka, a former Polish political prisoner, sails to Cape Town to start a new life of her own. On her arrival, she marries a Polish veterinary surgeon who is based in Ladybrand; and later Barkly East. Olenka’s dreams of an exotic African adventure soon turn into a traumatic roller-coaster ride as her marriage becomes plagued by financial woes, shadows of the past and complicated emotions which affect both of them. It is a deeply moving account of two foreigners struggling to make a fresh start for themselves in South Africa during the 1950’s.
